Yupper, stupid ferenge managed to find how to get all the way to the Hanoi Towers without getting lost. Wow! I am now an expert, having graduated to geo-201 in Vietnam. They have an interesting custom here. The doorman disappears every night about 9:30 with a green pad in his arm about the size of a loose-leaf binder. He reappears some 20 minutes later, same book. So here's the deal ... all hoteliers must register their overnight guests with the Vietnam police. That is where the doorman goes. Bien told me that if you are a private citizen and have an overnight guest who is not a family member, you must do the same.
And now for something completely different ...
- fine for no tail light on your motorcycle is 50,000 VND
- fine for no headlight is 500,000 VND
- fine for no helmet is 200,000 VND for a driver and more for a passenger
- fine for more than 2 people on a motorcycle is 20,000 VND
- there is no drinking age here
- driving age is 18 (wake up Canada)
The word for noodle soup here is "pho" with 2 accents on the "o" and the word here for street is "pho" with a tilde over the "o". So I live on "Pho Phan Chu Trinh" which I guess means "Phan Chu Trinh noodle soup"?? Bien naturally found this quite amusing.
